Law that required slaves to be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state, allowed any African American to basically be kidnapped
Cotton v. Conscience Whigs
Cotton: faction of northern Whigs that did not fight and at times actively supported slavery, Conscience: people who actively fought to end slavery

African American who escaped enslavement and became an abolitionist, editor, and author, most importantly was the first African American labor union leader, American League of Colored Laborers
Compromise of 1850
1850, laws that balanced the Northern desire to prevent the expansion of slavery (California and Washington DC), with the Southern desire to expand slavery, along with amending the Fugitive Slave Act
