Slaughterhouses were making people sick, one company got a monopoly which meant all of the other butchers had to work for them, sued by three African Americans, but they lost because the court ruled that the 13th Amendment only applied to slavery, and the 14th Amendment only applied to federal citizenship, not state. Massively narrowed the application of the 14th Amendment
