Igor Gouzenko
A Soviet intelligence officer that was stationed at the Soviet Unions Ottawa Embassy during WW11. After the war, he showed Canada documents that proved the Soviet Union was spying on the country.
The Cold War
Cold War meant that two posing sides would try to defeat each other by doing anything except for fighting. The participants were the US and Soviet Union who fought through spying, propaganda and political pressures.
The United Nations
This is an aorganzation that was created to stele differences amount nations before they lead to war. The aims of thr UN were to bond together to avoid war, encourage cooperation between countries, defend human rights and improve living conditions in the war.
War Brides
The term “war bride” refers to the estimated 48,000 young women who met and married Canadian servicemen during the Second World War. These war brides were mostly from Britain, but a few thousand were also from other areas of Europe. These War brides played a large part in the growth and development of Canada.
Korean War
The Soviet army occupied the northern half of the country and established a communist government while American troops occupied thr southern half. In June 1950 a North Korean army invaded Korea which started the war.
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organziation was formed on April 4 1949. It was made up of twelve nations and committed its members to collective security and to discourag the Soviet Union from taking hostile against members.
NORAD
In 1957, the North American Air Defence Command was set up between Canada and the US. It creates to stop the Soviet Union from striking at North America in case of a nuclear attack.
The Warsaw Pact
An mutual defence organization that was made up the Soviet Union and Seven other countries that put the soviets in charge of the armed forces.
The Marshal Pact
A US program that was partly a response to the Cold War and fears of communist expansion. It was beloved that countries struck by poverty were more likely to support communism.
The Colombo Plan
A program set up in 1950 to give technical and financial support to developing countries in Asia.
The First Wave
Groups that made up the first wave were refugees, war brides and general immigrants. Mackenzie King said that new immigrants would boost Canada’s population. Between 1946 and 1954 almost 1 million immigrants came to Canada most from Europe.
The Second Wave
Between 1954 and 1967 a second wave of almost 2 million immigrants came to Canadians. In 1967 the point system was introduced. People who wanted to come to Canada were given points based on education, occupational demand, age and knowledge of French or English.
The suburbs
New home developments were situated on the outskirts of cities because land was less expensive then in central business districts. By 1961, 11 million of Canada’s 18 million people loved in urban places, many in new suburbs.
John Diefenbaker
He was the leader of the Conservative party and had a new vision for Canada. Although it was a success, his appeal began to fade. Canada and the US suffered an economic slowdown. By 1962, unemployment figures in Canada had climbed higher than in any year since the Great Depression.
