Passchendale

A
  • the third battle of Ypres which started on July 1917
  • the ground made it hard to maoveur equipment, thr guns Canadians used were trapped in mud
  • Germans introduced Machine Gun nests place in zig zag fashion
  • many casualties, the battle will be remembered as being a waste of the soldiers lives

Somme

A
  • British thought attacking along the Somme valley was a good tactic
  • the Germans were hidden there and saw what they were preparing
  • the Aliies supplies weighed them down which was easier for Germans to attack.
  • there were around 270, 000 deaths of British and and French troops

Ypres

A
  • Centre of fighting between Germany and Canada
  • sandbags and duckboards were used to prevent soldiers from standing in the mud
  • Chlorine Gas was used in the second battle and it was fought unprepared
  • the poem Flanders Fields by John McCrae was written about his friend who died in this battle
  • poppies became the symbol of remembrance
