Canada’s PM
Mackenzie King was PM in the 20s and he dominated the liberal party
He received votes because of his spiritualism
Discussed with all groups and regions before making decisions
Technology
Radio- Voices, news and music could be broadcast across the country using radio signals. People living in isolated parts were brought in touch with other cities.
The Automobile- Henry Ford used mass production and assembly lines to produce the famous “model t”. It was fast, efficient, easy and a symbol of wealth.
Aviation- After the war, pilots preformed stunts while other got jobs as bush pilots which transport supplies and distinguish forest fires. In 1924, RCAF was made to use military planes for peaceful purposes such as transporting medicine.
Bloody Saturday
Between 15 May and 25 June 1919, more than 30,000 workers left their jobs. Factories, shops, transit and city services shut down. The strike resulted in arrests, injuries and the deaths of two protestors. It did not immediately succeed in empowering workers and improving job conditions. But the strike did help unite the working class in Canada
The Famous Five
A group of Canadian suffragists named Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, Henrietta Edwards and Nellie McClung. They played a large part in the persons case.
The Persons Case
Underlined the inequality women faced. In April 1928, the Supreme Court of Canada decided that women were not ‘persons’. The famous 5 appealed to the Privy Council. The judges declared the word ‘persons’ referred to men and women.
Group Of Seven
A group of Canadian landscape painters formed in 1920. They became pioneers to a new Canadian art style by finding ways to portray the beauty of Canadian landscapes.
Prohibition
Various women’s groups wanted a ban on alcohol
Husbands would often get drunk and beat women and grain should be used to feed civilians, not make alcohol
Prohibition was introduced by the government, banning production, importing and transporting of alcohol.
The Business Cycle
Prosperity- lots of jobs and people spend their money
Recession- job market shrinks and there is less spending
Depression- mass unemployment and the entire economy is affected
Recovery- jobs appearing and spending starts
