The Cognitive Approach To Treating Depression Flashcards
What is the cognitive approach to treating depression?
Cognitive behaviour therapy
What is the cognitive element to CBT?
Starts with an assessment with the client and Therapist clarify the problems and identify goals for therapy and put a plan together to achieve them
What is the behaviour element of CBT
Involves working to change be negative and irrational thoughts to put more effective behaviours into place
Describe becks cognitive therapy
Identify thoughts about the world, self and future (negative triad).
Then these are challenged eg by being asked to record every time someone was nice to them. This investigates the reality of their negative beliefs
What does REBT stand for
Rational emotive behaviour therapy
How is REBR linked to the abc model
Turns it into ABCDE model
- activating event
- belief
- consequences
- dispute
- effect
Describe REBT
Identify and dispute the irrational thoughts
Involved vigorous argument to break the negative thought
What is behavioural activation
Working with depressed people to decrease their avoidance and isolation, increasing engagement to activities they used to enjoy.
What is the strength for CBT
Lots of evidence supporting effectiveness for treating depression eg John March
compared CBT to anti-depressant drugs and a combination of both when treating 327 depressed teenagers after four months
81% of the CBT group
81% of the antidepressant group
86% of both
significantly improved
so CBT is just as effective when use on its own and also when alongside antidepressants.
What are the limitations for CBT
Lack of effectiveness in severe cases or disabled people
Severe cases may not be motivated enough to join in
Disabled people may not have the cognitive development to engage
High relapse rates
Ali - 42percent relapses in 6 months and 53 percent within a year
