The Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What is the cognitive approach?
The study of internal mental processes, the role of the schema through the use of theoretical and computer models
When did it develop?
The 1950’s
What is a schema?
A framework of beliefs and expectations which are developed from experience
What is cognitive neuroscience?
Scientific study or biological structures that underpin cognitive processes
What do they study regarding previous neglected areas of psychology?
Memory
Perception
Thinking
What is the information processing approach? - theoretical and computer models
Suggest that information flows through the cognitive system in a sequence of stages that include import, storage and retrieval
What do they compare the mind too?
A computer by suggesting that there are similarities in the way information is processed
What is the concept of central processing unit?
The concept of coding and the use of stores to hold information
What is neuroscience?
Scientific study of the the influence of the brain structures on mental processes
What did Paul broca identify in the 1860’s?
How a damaged area of the frontal lobe could be permanently impaired speech production
What have advanced in FMRI and PET scans allowed?
Able to systematically observe and describe the neurological basis of mental processes
What have scanning techniques provided?
Useful and establishing the neurological basis of some mental disorders like OCD
What are mind mapping techniques?
Brain fingerprinting
