What is it?
A perspective that describes different forces most of which are unconscious
The unconscious?
Part of mind that we are unaware of but which continues to direct much of our behaviour
What is the ID?
Entirely unconscious, selfish and has aggressive instincts that demand immediate gratification
What is the ego?
The reality check that balances the conflicting demands of The I’d and the superego
What is the superego?
Moralistic part which represents ideal self
What might the ego use?
Defence mechanisms to protect the conscious mind from discovering what is in the id
What are the 5 psychosexual stages?
Oral - 0/15 months Anal - 1/3 years Phallic - 3/6 Latency - 5/13 Genital
What is repression?
Prevents unpleasant memories becoming conscious
What is displacement?
Transferring feelings from the true source of distressing emotion onto a substitute target
What is projection?
A persons own thoughts are projected onto another person
