Biological Approach Evaluation Flashcards
What methods do the biological approaches use?
A range of precise and highly scientific methods - scanning techniques like FMRI’s and EEG’s/family and twin studies - reliable
With advances in technology what does this mean?
It is possible to accurately measure biological/neural processes without bias - reliable
What has increasing understanding of mental processes in the brain led to? - real life application
The development of psychoactive drugs that treat serious mental illnesses like depression - management of condition
What is a limitation of the biological approach in terms of evidence from studies?
It is claiming to have discovered causes where only an association exists
What type of determinism is the approach?
Very deterministic - sees human behaviour governed by internal causes that we have no control over
What does the approach argue about twins etc?
Any similarities in the way twins/family members behave or look may be genetic
Confounding variable in the research regarding twins?
They are exposed to sunlight environmental conditions - could be nurture rather than nature
