the cognitive approach Flashcards
what does the cognitive aproach focus on ?
how people perceive, store, manipulate and interpret information. also known as internal mental processes
outline the cognitive model?
input(in the enviroment) -> mediational processes (mental event) ->output(behaviour)
how do scientists draw on what a mediational process is?
inference through observing behavioru
what is a schema?
a cognitive framework that helps organise and interpret information in the brain.
who did the digit span experiment and when
Jacaobs (1887)
outline the digit span technique?
he concluded through inference from his findings that the capacity for short term memory is 2+/- 7
thi process has helped us understand the internal mental processes of memiry
what is a theoretical model?
simplifies representations of an internal mental process?
what is a computer model?
the representation of internal mental processes as a computing processed
what is assimilation?
the adjustment of a schema by adding information similar to what is already known
what is accomidation?
alterning ones existing ideas(schemas) about how the world operates in response to new information and experiences.
why do we have schemas?
-they organise out experiences
-they help us predict and understand the situation we are in
-they guide our responses and behaviour
-they provide a cognitive shortcut
how are internal mental processes represented theoretical models?
arrows and boxes
why do psychologists build theoretical models?
internal mental processses are too complex too capture
by oversimplifying these proceses, psychologists are able to provide simple explanation that can form the basis of experimentation and investigation.
theoretical models can be adapted and changed as new research findings are published
define cognitive neuroscience?
the use of scanning techniques and the study of neurotypical individuals to locate the physical basis of cognitive processes in the brain
what is a PET scan ?
uses radioactivity to measure brain function
