The CNS and the brain (pack 1) Flashcards
what is the CNS made up of and what are their functions?
- The brain- draws together information over the body and sends info back in response
- The spinal cord- contains nerves that carry messages between brain and body
what is the CNS
a central processor and control centre for human behaviour
what happens when the body receives information from the senses
PNS sends in to CNS
brain processes and integrates all info and generates a response
3 steps the CNS takes
- receives
- processes
- responds
what are the four lobes of the brain
frontal lobe
parietal lobe
occipital lobe
temporal lobe
function of frontal lobe
higher executive functions such as reasoning and problem solving
primary motor cortex
function of parietal lobe
integrating sensory info into touch, temp, pressure and pain
function of occipital lobe
major visual processing centre
interp. depth, distance
function of temporal lobe
processing sensory info
recognising language etc
what is your PFC part of
frontal lobe
what is the function of the PFC?
executive functions such as inhibiting inappropriate responses, decision making and motivational behaviour
what does the PFC link to?
aggression
what is the right hemisphere concerned with?
creativity, intuition and movement of left hand side of body
what is he left hemisphere concerned with?
The right side of the body and a role to play in language functioning
what is the corpus callosum
a bundle of neurons that joins the hemispheres together
what is the function of the corpus callosum
ensures that the hemispheres are able to communicate with each other
what is the limbic system?
a complex system of structures and nerves inside the brain
what has the limbic system been linked to?
mood
what does the limbic system control?
basic emotions (anger, pleasure) and drives (dominance, sex and hunger)
what are the four parts to the limbic system
- Thalamus
- Amygdala
- Hippocampus
- Hypothalamus
what is the function of the thalamus
relays info from the five senses to relevant parts in the cortex
important role in emotions and what we deem threatening
what is the function of the amygdala
anger and fear
if our senses perceive a threat, it is stimulated and triggers fight or flight
what is the function of the hippocampus
key for memory formation
converting STM to LTM
what is the function of the hypothalamus
regulates bodily functions by stimulating the release of hormones
linked to fight or flight
enable us to act aggressive and fight
