Gottesman and Shields study- twin studies (pack 3) Flashcards
aim
researchers aimed to see whether schizophrenia had a genetic basis. They examined records of patients in a psychiatric hospital over a sixteen- year period
sample
57 schizophrenic patients that were one member of a twin
tracked down the other twin for each ppt
24 MZ
33 MZ
how did they collect data
hospital records
self-report questionnaires
self-report interviews
personality testing
what were the 4 categories patients could have been put into?
1) both proband twin and co-twin hospitalised with schizophrenia
2) both had hospitalisation, but co-twin had been given another diagnosis relating to schizophrenia
3) co-twin had some psychiatric abnormality, but nothing relating to schizophrenia
4) proband had schizophrenia, but co-twin diagnosed as clinically normal
what were two results from the study?
- concordance rates for schizophrenia were higher in F compared to M
- Concordance rates for severe schizo were much higher in MZ than DZ
two conclusions
- schizo has a bio basis as the chance of developing it appears to be influenced by genes
- not totally caused by genes otherwise concordance rate for MZ would be 100%, thus, social factors
