After 6 months of siege at Vicksburg Grant forced pemberton to surrender and the union gained control of the Mississippi River.

Because the jaw hawkers imprisoned and killed women they raided and burned Lawrence killing two hundred men and boys for revenge

Lincoln issued this after the battle of Antietam
It freed slaves in the confederate states as the union advanced
