a Confederate general during the American Civil War. his greatest contribution to the United States was his effort to reunite the country following the American Civil War. In the opinions of his contemporaries and historians, Lee played a crucial role in restoring peace following the war.
Ulysses S. Grant
Grant led the Union Armies to victory over the Confederacy in the American Civil War. As an American hero, Grant was later elected the 18th President of the United States (1869–1877), working to implement Congressional Reconstruction and to remove the vestiges of slavery.
William Tecumseh Sherman
He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–1865), who earned recognition for his command of military strategy but criticism for the harshness of his scorched earth policies, which he implemented in his military campaign against the Confederate States.
