A machine used in the late 1700’s, invented by Eli Whitney and was used to separate seeds from cotton. Because of high demand of cotton, people enslaved others to do work for them.

Cotton was a very popular crop, the importance of cotton production.

Rules for slaves that were never actually enforced

3. could not testify in court against a white person
4. could not enter into any legal documents
5. no right to vote
