The circulayory system Flashcards
What is the circulatory system composed of
Heart arteries arterioles capillaries venues veins and the blood flowing through them
What does an artery do
Carries blood away from the heart
What are arterioles
Small arteries
What do veins do
Carry blood to the heart
What do capillaries do
Link arterioles and venues
Which has a thick wall and which is thin
Arteries+veins are thick, capillaries are thin
What is exchanged through the thin walls of capillaries
Exchange oxygen carbon dioxide nutrients wastes etc
How is a vein constructed
Contain valves regularly spaced point in direction of blood flow. Valves can be pushed open to allow blood to flow to the heart, but close to prevent back flow
What are varicose veins
Valves fail to close completely form bulging pools. Veins become swollen because of increased blood volume. Failure to close caused by loss of elasticity- veins become stretched and valve flaps fail to meet
What takes blood away from heart and what takes it to the heart
Artery - vein
What travels smoothly vs what travels in small spurts
Vein-artery
Which has valves
Artery
Which has thick walls
Artery
Which is low in 02 high in co2 less bright red and more maroon
Vein
Low pressure
