Function of liver
- Filter blood coming from digestive tract before passing it to rest of body
- detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs
Function of kidney
Extracts waste from blood, balances body fluids, makes pee
Function of pancreas
Converts food into fuel for body cells. Also helps in digestion and regulates blood sugar
Function of gallbladder
Store and concentrate bile which is produced in liver and used to digest fatty foods
Function of pharynx
Throat- muscular walls function to swallow and serves a pathway for the movement of food from the mouth to the esophagus
Function of salivary glands
Glands that produce saliva which keeps parts of the mouth and other parts of the digestive system moist. Also helps break down carbohydrates and lubricates the passage of food down from the oropharynx to the esophagus to the stomach
Function of esophagus
Long thin muscular tube that connects pharynx to stomach. Forms important piece of the gastrointestinal tract and functions as the conduit for food and liquid that have been swallowed by the pharynx to reach the stomach
Function of stomach
A muscular organ receives food from esophagus as the food reaches end of esophagus it enters stomach through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter. The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food
Function of anus
Last part of digestive tract. A 2 inch long canal consisting of pelvic floor muscles and the 2 anal sphincters
Function of small intestine
Part of intestines where 90% of digestion and absorption takes place. The other 10% takes place in stomach and the large intestine. Main function is to absorb nutrients and minerals from food
