The Circulatory System Flashcards
What causes coronary artery disease?
When the coronary arteries become partially blocked with plaque which normally circulates through the body
How can coronary artery disease be diagnosed?
With the use of a special x-ray called an angiogram, in which a fluorescent dye is injected into the bloodstream
Where do arteries carry blood?
Away from the heart
What are capillaries?
Small blood vessels where blood exchanges many substances with the surrounding tissue
What are coronary arteries?
The blood vessels that provide blood to the heart muscle tissue itself
What are muscles and nerves covered by in the heart?
Epithelial tissues
What are the four components of blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, plateletes, and plasma
What are the three main functions of the circulatory system?
- Transporting substances around the body
- Regulating body temperature
- Transporting white blood cells to areas of the body where there are viruses or bacteria
What are the three types of tissues that make up the heart?
- Cardiac muscle tissue
- Nerve tissue
- Connective tissue
What do plateletes help with?
Blood clotting
What do veins do?
Carry blood towards the heart after the exchange in the capillaries
What does hemoglobin allow red blood cells to do?
Transport oxygen throughout the body
What does plasma do?
Carries blood cells along
What does the circulatory system move to all the cells in the body?
Nutrients absorbed from the intestine
What happens when the coronary arteries become completely blocked?
The heart muscle cells can no longer get the oxygen and nutrients they need to function, then the heart stops pumping and the heart tissue starts to die
What kind of tissue is blood?
Connective tissue
What is the circulatory system made up of?
The heart, the blood, and the blood vessels
What is the main function of white blood cells?
Recognize and destroy invading bacteria and viruses
What is the purpose of epithelial tissue?
It reduces friction and protects the heart from damage when the lungs expand and contract
What links arteries and veins together?
Capillaries
What makes the heart contract?
All the cardiac muscle tissue in the heart contracting at the same time
What protein is found in red blood cells?
Hemoglobin
Why are the walls of arteries thicker than walls of other blood vessels?
Because they carry the blood away from the heart, they are under the most pressure
