Cells Flashcards
What is an organism with a nucleus called?
Eukaryote
What is an organism without a nucleus called?
Prokaryote
What are the two possibilities for eukaryotes to be?
Single celled organsim or multicellular organsim
What is the cell theory?
- All living things are made up of cells
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
- The cell is the simplest unit that can carry out all life processes
What are organelles?
The parts inside the cell, each carrying out a specific function
What is the function of cytoplasm?
To suspend the organelles in the cell
What is the function of golgi bodies?
To collect and process materials to be removed from the cell, also to create and secrete mucus
What are ribosomes the site of?
Protein synthesis
What is the function of the cell membrane?
To support the cell and control what comes in and stays out
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
To transport materials around the cell
What is the function of the mitochondrias?
To make energy available to the cell
What does the nucleus contain?
The genetic information that controls cell activities
What is the function of chloroplasts (plant cell)?
Give leaves green colour and absorbs light energy used in photosynthesis
What is the function of the cell wall (plant cell)?
To provide support and protection for the cell
What is the function of vacuoles (animal cell)?
To provide storage, remove unwanted substances, and maintain internal fluid pressure in the cell
