The Circulatory System Flashcards
(19 cards)
How do substances travel to and from cells?
through the blood
Blood is transported around the body in_________?
blood vessels
Which organ pushes blood around the body?
the heart
What is the name given to the transport system of humans?
the circulatory system
Which internal organ transports oxygen ?
red blood cells
The circulatory system is made up of three parts what are they?
1) the blood components
2) the heart
3) blood vessels
Name the three blood vessels
the arteries
the veins
the capillaries
The walls of the heart are made of a special kind of muscle called_______?
the cardiac muscle
How many chambers does the heart have?
4 chambers
Each side of the heart has two parts, what are they called
the atrium and the ventricle
What is the function of the atrium?
to receive blood
What is the function of the ventricle?
to pump blood away from the heart
On which side of the heart is oxygenated blood?
left side
On which side of the heart is deoxygenated blood?
right side
What is the septum?
the muscular wall that separates the left side of the heart from the right side of the heart
Name the 4 chambers of the heart
right atrium
left atrium
right ventricle
left ventricle
name the 4 valves of the heart
tricuspid valve
bicuspid valve
pulmonic valve
aortic valve
Describe how blood flows through the heart
Deoxygenated blood flows into the right atrium through the vena cava then it passes through the tricuspid valve and goes into the right ventricle. The walls of the right ventricle then contract and the blood is pushed into the pulmonary artery through the pulmonary valve and then the blood travels to the lungs. There gases are exchanged, excess carbon dioxide leaves the blood and diffuses into the lungs and oxygen moves into the blood from the alveoli. The blood returns from the lungs oxygenated via the pulmonary veins then flows into the left atrium. The blood then passes through the bicuspid valve and flows into the left ventricle. The walls of the left ventricle contract and pushes the blood through the aortic valve then into the aorta and all the way around the body.
How many time does blood flow into the heart in one circuit of the body?
twice
