Q

What is Osmosis?

A

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from a region with high concentration to a region with lower concentration.

Q

Give five examples of osmosis

A

feeling thirsty after having salty food, kidney dialysis, plants absorbing water from the soil through the roots, when the fingers are placed in water for a long period of time and they become pruney, If a freshwater, or saltwater fish is placed in water with different salt concentrations the fish dies due to entry or exit of water.

12
Q

Differentiate among the 3 types of osmosis

A

in a hypotonic solution the size of the cell increases because more water is going inside of the cell, in a hypertonic solution the size of the cell decreases and shrivels up because more water is coming out of it, and in an isotonic solution there is an equal amount of water molecules both inside and outside of the cell.

16
Q

What will happen to an animal cell when placed in a hypotonic solution?

A

the cell will lyse / break apart into smaller pieces

17
Q

What is osmotic pressure?

A

Osmotic pressure is the pressure required to stop water from diffusing through a membrane

18
Q

give five examples of diffusion

A

food coloring spreading when it is placed in water, opening a soda bottle and the CO2 diffuses into the air, the smell of perfumes, dipping tea bags in hot water, and dust particles diffusing into the air causing air pollution.
