The Central Nervous System Flashcards
How many neurones is the brain made up of?
1000 billion
What are the 2 main parts of the nervous system?
- Central Nervous System
- Peripehral Nervous System
What does the CNS consist of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What does the PNS consist of?
The somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
Where are the brain and the spinal cord?
Brain - the skull
Spinal Cord - the vertebrae
What does the PNS control?
Everything off to the side (other than the brain and the spinal cord)
Define reflex arc
Messages which only go to the spinal cord and back (e.g. hand on burning pan example)
Which two main parts is the brain sectioned into?
The left hemisphere and the right hemisphere
Define contralateral control
The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body whilst the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body
Define lateralisation
Each side of the brain has different jobs
Which side of the brain is the dominant side?
The left
What is the cortex?
The crinkly bit at the top of the brain
How many layers does the brain have?
Three layers:
Fish brain - Controls essential things (e.g. breathing, heart beating etc.)
Lizard brain - Responsible for things such as emotions
Mamilian brain - Responsible for things such as socialisation, language etc.
How many parts is the brain divided into?
Four:
- Frontal lobe
- Parietal lobe
- Temporal lobe
- Occipitial lobe
Which is the largest of the four parts of the brain?
The frontal lobe
What is the process and location of the frontal lobe and what is it a part of?
Process - Carries out higher mental processes such as thinking, decisions etc.
Location - Front of the brain
Part of - The cerebrum
What is the process and location of the parietal lobe and what is it a part of?
Process - Processes sensory information (e.g. taste, temperature, touch etc.)
Location - Behind the frontal lobe
Part of - the cerebrum
What is the process and location of the temporal lobe and what does it contain?
Process - Auditory information from the ears (helps understand speech)
Location - Bottom middle part of the cortex
It contains the hippocampus
What is the process and location of the occipital lobe?
Process - Visual information from the eyes
Location - At the bottom of the brain and the back of the cortex
