Neurotransmitter Flashcards
What is the function of GABA, what does it regulate and what can a deficiency cause?
Function - Inhibits the activity of neurones
Regulates anxiety
Deficiency can cause anxiety
What is the function of serotonin, what does it regulate and what 2 things can a deficiency cause?
Function - Controls mood (predominantly), sleep, hunger etc.
Regulates mood
A deficiency can cause depression and anxiety
What is the function of oxytocin and what is it known as?
Function - Induces labour and lactation
Known as the love hormone
What is the function of noradrenaline, what is it known as and what illness’ is it associated with?
Function - Controls emotions
Known as the stress hormone
An excess of noradrenaline can cause shizophrenia whilst a deficiency can cause ADHD, depression and low blood pressure
What is the function of glutamate and what can an excess cause?
Function - Activates neurones and enables neurotransmission to take place
An excess can cause seizures, strokes and death
What is the function of acetylcholine, what are its effects and what can an excess cause?
Function - Sends signals to other nerve cells
Effects - Causes muscles to contract and activates pain responses
An excess can cause parkinsons
What is the function of dopamine, which 2 things is it associated with and what illnesses is it associated with?
Function - Controls emotions, cognitive functions and movement
Is associated with the reward system and addiction
An excess can cause schizophrenia whilst a deficiency can cause depression
What are the 7 neurotransmitters?
- GABA
- Serotonin
- Oxytocin
- Noradrenaline
- Glutamate
- Acetylcholine
- Dopamine
Which neurotransmitters are associated with learning and memory?
Glutamate, noradrenaline and acetylcholine
