The Cell Cycle + Bacterial Growth Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Cell Cycle?
A
The Cell Cycle is a regular cycle of cell division seperated by periods of growth
2
Q
What are the 5 stages of the Cell Cycle?
A
- Cell grows and replicates their organelle (Interphase)
- The cell replicates its DNA (most time spent)
- Mitosis (Nuclei division)
- Two nuclei form
- Cellular Division - Two new identical cells form
3
Q
What process do bacterial cells multiply by?
A
Bacterial cells multiply by Binary Fission. It is a form of Asexual reproduction
4
Q
What are the differences between Asexual and Sexual reproduction?
A
Asexual:
- 1 parent
- Identical offspring
- Can happen every 20 minutes
- No genetic material mixed
- Happens in bacteria and plants
Sexual:
- 2 parents
- Not identical offspring
- Mixing of genetic material
- Happens slowly over a long period of time
- Happens in humans/animals and plants
5
Q
What affects bacterial replication?
A
- Inadequate amount of nutrients
- Availability of oxygen
- Incorrect temperature
6
Q
How do you workout the Total number of bacteria present after (n) generations?
A
Total number = 2^generations x amount of bacteria
