Parts and Types of Cells Flashcards
What is a Cell?
A cell is a very small micro-organism which can have a number of different jobs
What is an Organelle?
A tiny cellular structure in a cell that perform specific funtions so it helps the cell do its job
What is the function of the Vacuole?
The Vacuole helps keep the cell rigid and supports the cell (structurally)
What is the function of Chloroplast?
Chloroplast traps light for photosynthesis
What is the function of the Cell Wall?
The Cell Wall provides strength and support for the cell
What is the function of the Nucleus?
The Nucleus controls the activities of the cell
What is the function of the Cell Membrane?
The Cell Membrane controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
What is the function of the Cytoplasm?
The Cytoplasm is where chemical reactions occur (e.g. Respiration)
What is the function of Ribosomes?
Ribosomes are where protein synthesis occurs
What is the function of Mitochondria?
The Mitochondria is where oxygen is used and energy is released during respiration
What is a Prokaryotic Cell?
A Prokaryotic Cell is a cell that:
- Doesn’t have a true nucleus
- Dosen’t contain membrane bound organelle
E.g. Bacteria
What Organelle would you find in a Prokaryotic Cell?
- Free floating DNA
- Ribosomes
- Cell membrane
- Cell Wall
- Plasmids
- Flagellum (only in some)
What is a Eukaryotic Cell?
A Eukaryotic Cell is a cell that:
- Has a Nucleus
- Contains membrane bound organelle
E.g. All animal and plant cells
