Enzymes Flashcards
What is an Enzyme?
An enzyme is a Biological Catalyst (a protein that speeds up chemical reactions, not alive)
Name 3 processes that require enzymes:
- Respiration
- Digestion
- Photosynthesis
What is the Active Site?
The active site is the section of the enzyme that the reactant fits into
What is the Substrate?
The substrate is a molecule that the enzyme breaks down/binds to the active site
What is the Product?
The molecule(s) produced after the reaction
What is the Enzyme Substrate-Complex?
The enzyme substrate-complex is the combined structure of an enzyme when a complementary substrate fits into its active site
What is the Lock and Key Theory?
The Lock and Jey Theory is that the active site must be complementary to the substrate
What is the Rate of Reaction?
The rate of reaction is the speed at which a chemical reaction happens
How do you work out the rate of reaction?
Difference/Time
*(Difference in the reactant used)
What are the Digestive Enzymes and what do they do?
Digestive Enzymes are biological catalysts that are released from glands and help break down large molecules of food so they diffuse into the blood
