the cell cycle Flashcards
What is a zygote?
A fertilised ovum.
What is a gamete?
A sex cell, in animals, these are sperm and ova.
What is a embryo?
An unborn child in the process of development.
What are somatic cells?
A cell in the body which is not a gamete or undifferentiated stem cell.
What is haploid?
Having only one set of chromosomes, represented by n.
What is diploid?
Having two sets of chromosomes, represented by 2n.
What is the cell cycle?
The sequence of events that take place in a cell to prepare for cell division.
What is interphase?
The phase of the cell cycle in which the cell is preparing for division.
What is mitosis?
The division of a nucleus into two genetically identical nuclei.
What is cytokinesis?
The division of the cytoplasm and organelles to produce two genetically identical daughter cells.
What is fertilisation?
The union of two gametes/gamete nuclei, to produce a zygote.
