biological molecules Flashcards
What is a monomer?
A single monomer unit that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer
What is a polymer?
A large molecules made up of repeating units called monomers and are formed in polymerisation reactions
What occurs in a condensation reaction?
Monomers are combined into polymers with the loss of water
What occurs in a hydrolysis reaction?
Polymers are broken down into monomers by the addition of water.
What is the general formula of monosaccharides?
Cn(H2O) (e.g. glucose C6H12O6)
What is the monomer for carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides (glucose)
What is the polymer for carbohydrates?
Polysaccharides (starch)
What is the monomer for proteins?
Amino acids
What type of bond joins two monosaccharides together to form a disaccharide?
Glycosidic bond (covalent bond)
What monomer is starch made of?
Glucose
Which molecule is used for energy storage in animal cells?
Glycogen
Which two molecules make up triglycerides?
Glycerol and fatty acid chains
What type of bonds are used to join fatty acids to a glycerol molecule?
Ester bonds
Which molecules form a phospholipid?
A glycerol phosphate head and two fatty acid chains
What elements are found in proteins?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen
