The Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is the pattern of growth and division (all cells share) is called?
The Cell Cycle
What triggers a cell to divide?
Growth, replication, and cell death (new cells to fill space)
What happens in a somatic cell before division?
Growth and DNA replication
What are the three major divisions of the cell cycle?
Interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis
What happens during interphase?
Growth
DNA replicates
Organelles copy
Cell is in its living phase
What happens during mitosis?
The cell separates into two separate, genetically identical daughter cells
The cytoplasm is still connected
What happens during cytokinesis?
Cell cleaves (cleavage)
Cytoplasm splits and the cell wall/membrane grows
What happens during Prophase?
Chromosomes condense
Membrane disappears
Centrioles move to opp. ends of the cell
Spindle fibers form
What happens during Metaphase?
Chromosomes “line dance”
Chromosomes attach to spindle fibers
What happens during Anaphase?
Spindles separate sister chromosomes and pull to opp. ends of the cell
What happens during Telophase?
Chromosome sets assemble at opposite sides
Nuclear membrane reforms around chromosomes.
What are the proteins called that DNA coils around to make a condensed chromosome?
Histone Proteins
What are all cells in the human body
