The Cell Flashcards
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life and the smallest living unit.
What organisms are composed of cells?
All living organisms are composed of cells
What are cells made up of?
Each cell has different parts called organelles
Which cells are usually circular
Animal cell
What cells are usually rectangular?
Plant cells
What is the cell membrane?
The cell membrane surrounds and protects the contents of the cell.
What is the cytoplasm?
A gelatinous structure which occupies a large portion of the cell. It holds all the organelles in place
What is the nucleus?
The largest organelle that directs all cell activities. It contains chromosomes that allow the cell to grow and reproduce
Where is the nucleolus found?
Inside the nucleus
What are chromosomes?
Contain DNA
What is the vacuole?
Balloon like spaces in the cytoplasm that store nutrients and other substances
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
A folded membrane that play a large role in cellular transport
What are mitochondrion?
They produce energy needed for cell activity
What is the cell wall?
It is found only in plant cells and serves as support for the cell
What are chloroplasts?
They are green organelles involved in photosynthesis. Made up of chlorophyll that make them green
