• Protects against blood loss (clotting) and foreign bodies (micro-organisms/toxins) through WBC’s and plasma proteins

Layers of the heart

Pericardium:
- A double layered serous membrane encasing the heart which protects and lubricates. The inner most layer is the epicardium
Myocardium:
- Located inside the sac formed by the pericardium
- Thickest layer of heart tissue- the muscle
Endocardium:
- Inner membraneous lining between the myocardium and chambers of the heart
