He was tending Jethro (his father in law)’s sheep.
Where did Moses lead the sheep?
To Horeb, God’s mountain.
Where did God’s angel appear?
In the flames of a bush.
What was so special about the bush?
It did not burn up.
What did God tell Moses to do at first, and why?
God told Moses to take off his sandals, because he was on holy ground.
Why did Moses hide his face?
He was afraid to look at God.
What did God say?
He said He had seen the suffering of the Israelites and he was going to rescue them. He told Moses to go to the Pharoah.
How did Moses feel about going to the Pharoah?
He was reluctant to go.
What did God say his name was?
‘I am’.
What do we learn about God in this story?

- God is above nature - he can set a bush on fire without it burning up.
- God is compassionate - he cares about the Israelites and is going to help them.
- God is holy - Moses must take off his sandals.
- God is pure and eternal - flames symbolise purification: the temporary burns away and the eternal remains.
- God is generous - he gives the Israelites a ‘land flowing with milk and honey’: he keeps his covenant.
