Parable: The Good Samaritan Flashcards
What made Jesus tell this parable?
An expert in the law asked him, ‘Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus asked him what was written in the Law, and he answered correctly. But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked, ‘And who is my neighbor?’
Where was the man in this parable going, and from where?
The man was walking from Jerusalem to Jericho.
What happened to him while he was walking?
Robbers attacked him, stole from him and left him half-dead.
Who came along the road first, and what did they do?
A priest came along first, and they passed on the other side of the road.
Who came along the road second, and what did they do?
A Levite came along second, and they passed on the other side of the road as well.
Who came along the road third, and what did they do?
A Samaritan came along third, and he took pity on the man. He bandaged his wounds and took him to an inn. He gave 2 denarii to the innkeeper and told him that he would pay him back if he had any extra expense.
Why did the priest and the Levite walk on the other side of the road and not help the man?
In Jewish law, a dead body was considered unclean. If either the priest or the Levite touched a dead body, they could not enter the Temple. Neither man bothered to check if the man was alive.
What would the traditional Jewish answer to ‘who is my neighbour’ be?
Other Jews.
Why did Jesus choose the Samaritan to be the neighbour?
The Samaritan would have been the person that was least expected to help the Jew. Choosing the Samaritan shows that everyone is your neighbour and be kind to everyone, regardless of race or religion.
