The conditional act of restraint of annates – 1532
- Banned payments of annates (payments from bishops when in position to popes) to Rome
This money would instead go to Henry
Act was conditional - wouldn’t be enforced if pope had granted divorce
Act of restraint of appeals – 1533
• Aim = to end papacy’s right to act as a final court of appeal
All rulings now made in England
• Act aimed at CofA as she can longer appeal to pope for help in divorce case

• Repeat of earlier act but was no longer conditional as pope had not agreed to divorce
• Money now went to H
Act of dispensations 1534
Reduced powers of the pope
Cut off money to the pope
• Dispensations could only now be granted by English authority and not the Pope.
• HVIII try to delay this act saying that parts could be reversed if Pope agreed to divorce.
Act for the submission of the clergy – 1534
• Prevented the Church from making any regulations without the Kings consent
Increased Henry’s power and church controlled by monastery
Act of succession – 1534
• Declared AB marriage valid
• CofA marriage invalid and M illegitimate
• Failure to acknowledge AB’s children as successors to H7 was treason
• Subjects had to take oath of succession agreeing to this
• Refusal to take the oath led to arrests – eg Thomas more – treason.

• H8 – supreme head of church of eng
• Now The Church Of England
• Henry abandoned Rome
• This act marks beginning of English reformation
Act of first fruits and tenths
• First fruits was the first year of wages of a priest given to the pope
Now went to the crown
Act extinguishing the authority of the bishop of Rome
• Removed all papal authority in eng and confirmed other acts
• Anyone defending pope could lose their property
How did Thomas More oppose the BWR?
defended Catholic Church, religious obligation
Refused to acknowledge H as supreme head of the church
Dangerous opponent as well respected
More tried for treason.
Why was there a lack of opposition?
Fear
Many thought changes wouldn’t last
Many expected H to remain RC
Motivated by self interest
Prot welcomed
Didn’t notice the changes
End result was far from clear
