    This money would instead go to Henry
    Act was conditional - wouldn’t be enforced if pope had granted divorce

Act of restraint of appeals – 1533

A

• Aim = to end papacy’s right to act as a final court of appeal
All rulings now made in England

• Act aimed at CofA as she can longer appeal to pope for help in divorce case

• Dispensations could only now be granted by English authority and not the Pope.

• HVIII try to delay this act saying that parts could be reversed if Pope agreed to divorce.

A

• Declared AB marriage valid
• CofA marriage invalid and M illegitimate
• Failure to acknowledge AB’s children as successors to H7 was treason
• Subjects had to take oath of succession agreeing to this
• Refusal to take the oath led to arrests – eg Thomas more – treason.
