The Brain Flashcards
Thalamus
Small structure deep in the brain
Relays sensory and motor signals, conciousness, sleep, alertness.
Processes and filters sensory signals.
Hypothalamus
Located in its center responsible for homeostasis.
Hormone production, regulates appetite, mood, heart rate, sleep, thirst, and sex drive.
Amygdala
Emotional proces, located in the medial frontal lobe, in front of the hippocampus.
Memory and emotion, lymbic system.
Hippocampus
Located in the temporal lobe, memory, learning, and decision making.
Cerebellum
Next to spinal cord, coordinates muscle movement, aides in learning, timing and even emotion and decision making.
Motor coordination
Motor learning
Processing sensory to coordinate
Thinking speaking remembering communicating.
Reticular Formation
Wakefulness, sleep, attention. Discriminates background information., helps with auto functions.
Pons
Manages pain singals and regulates alertness when you wake up.
Pituitary Gland
Produce and releases hormones, that help carry out important bodily functions, growth, and metabolism
Located ath the base of the brain, behind bridge of nose, below hypothalamus.
Medulla Oblongata
Controls involutary functions like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and reflex actions like coughing and swallowing.
Spinal Cord
Transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body, coordinates reflexes.
Runs down the vertebral column and connects to the brainstem at hte medulla.
Corpus Callosum
A large amount of nerves that connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain, communicating both sides.
Located in center of the brain, above the thalamus, beneath the cortex.
Brainstem
Basic life functions; breathing, heart rate, blood pressure.
Located at base of the brain, connects to spinal cord, medulla, pons, and midbrain.
Frontal Lobe
Higher cognitive funcitons such as secision making, problem solving, reasoning, planning and voluntary motor activity. influences personality and emotions.
Front of brain behind forehead.
Temporal Lobe
Auditory information, memory formation, language, and emotions
Occipital Lobe
Processes visual information, perception, color recognition.
Back of the brain, behind the parietal and temporal lobes.
