The brain Flashcards
Name the different parts of the brain
Cerebral cortex
Cerebellum
Medulla
Hypothalamus
Which part of the brain controls memory, consciosness and personality?
Cerebral Cortex
Which part of the brain controls fine muscle activity, balance and posture?
Cerebellum
Which part of the brain controls unconscious activities such as heart rate, reflexes and breathing?
Medulla
The cerebral cortex is split into two h_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
fill in the blank
The cerebral cortex is split into two hemispheres
Which side of the body does the right hemisphere of the brain control?
The left side of the body
Which side of the body does the left hemisphere of the brain control?
The right side of the body
Which part of the brain contains the pituitary gland?
Hypothalamus
Name the three different methods of studying the brain
- Studying patients with brain damage
- Electrically stimulating the brain
- MRI scans
Explain how studying patients with brain damage helps us to study the brain
When a small part of a person’s brain has been damaged, the effect that the damage has on the patient tells us what the function of the damaged part of the brain was
(e.g. if the person begins speaking a diff/ language after brain damage, we can tell the part of the brain that was affected is the part that controls language)
What is the name given to scientists who study the brain?
Neuroscientists
Explain how electrical stimulation is used to study the brain
Tiny electrodes are pushed into the tissue of different parts of the brain to electrically stimulate it.
By observing the responses from stimulating different parts of the brain does it is possible to find out the function of these different parts of the brain.
Explain how using MRI scans can help to study the brain
The MRI scanner can produce a very detailed image of the different structures in the barin
Scientists can use it to find out which parts of the brain are active when doing certain activities such as recalling a memory
Why is studying the brain difficult?
The brain is complex and delicate.
Studying the brain comes with risks, such as physical damage to the brain and increased problems with brain function
