the brain Flashcards
what are the main 3 sections of the brain?
- forebrain
- midbrain
- hindbrain
what are the components that make up the forebrain?
- cerebrum
- cerebral cortex
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
- pituitary gland
- olfactory bulbs
- optic nerve
what is the function of the cerebrum?
- initiates and co-ordinates movement
- contains 90% of all neurons in the nervous system
- split into 4 lobes
what is the purpose of the cerebral cortex?
grey matter in the brain responsible for “intelligent” behaviour
what are the four lobes in the cerebrum?
- frontal lobe
- parietal lobe
- occipital lobe
- temporal lobe
what is the function of the frontal lobe?
responsible for voluntary muscle movement, memory, thinking and planning
what is the function of the parietal lobe?
responsible for receiving and processing sensory information
what is the function of the occipital lobe?
responsible for receiving and processing visual information
what is the function of the temporal lobe?
aids in memory formation and language/speech production
what is the thalamus’ function?
to process information from the sense organs and relay to the cerebral cortex
what is one function of the hypothalamus?
- secretes releasing hormones to be sent to the pituitary gland
- helps control the ANS
- helps aid homeostasis
what is the purpose of the midbrain?
acts as a pathway for fibres running from the hindbrain to the forebrain carrying the senses of hearing and sight
what does the midbrain contain?
the reticular formation (RF)
what is the reticular formation’s purpose?
to receive and transmit information (sensory and motor) between the brain and the body
what are the components that make up the hindbrain?
- cerebellum
- pons
- medulla oblongata
