blood Flashcards
what are the two functions of blood?
transport and regulation
what does the blood transport?
- nutrients (amino and fatty acids)
- waste products
- hormones and enzymes
- oxygen
what does the blood regulate?
- blood clotting
- defence against infection
what is the purpose of plasma in the blood?
- allows transport
- contains fibrin for blood clotting
- contains carbonic acid for maintaining blood pH
what is an erythrocyte?
- a red blood cell
- most numerous blood cell in the body
what is the function of erythrocytes?
to transport oxygen
what gives erythrocytes their red pigment?
heamoglobin
what is heamoglobin responsible for?
delivery of oxygen to the tissues
(1 heamoglobin molecule contains 4 oxygen molecules)
what is a leukocyte?
a white blood cell
what are the 4 types of leukocytes?
- neutrophils
- lymphocytes
- eosinophils
- monocytes
what is the neutrophils roles?
engulfs microbes and bacteria via “phagacytosis”
what is the lymphocytes roles?
- responsible for immune response
- involved in production of antibodies
what is the eosinophils roles?
- regulation of allergic and inflammatory processes
- secrete enzymes that inactivate histamine
- phagacytosis of larger molecules
what are the monocytes roles?
kill microbes and bacteria
what are thrombocytes?
platelets
