The Body Flashcards
What is the science of anatomy
The science of the body structure and their relationships
What is the science of physiology
The science of the body functions
What are the six levels of structural organisation of the body
Chemical level, cellular level, tissue level, organ level, organ system level, organismal level
What are the four basic types of tissue
Muscle, bone, nerve, connective
Explain the differences between the 3 types of muscle tissue
Cardiac- the wells of the heart, appear striated and are under involuntary control.
Smooth- in the walls of the hollow visceral organs expect the heart, appear spindle shaped and are also under involuntary control.
Skeletal- occur in the muscles which are attached to the skeleton, striated appearance and are under voluntary control
What are the main types of functions of connective tissue
Connective tissue includes fibrous tissue, fat, cartilage, bone, marrow, and blood. They bind together with organs and hold them in place.
Explain the similarities and differences between nervous tissue and muscle tissue
Both excitable (they can respond instantly with an obvious response)
Muscle cells contract to produce movement whilst nerve cells send messages from receptor cells
Nerve cells are involved in the transmission of neural synapses
Name the process of a living human organism
Metabolism, responsiveness, movement, growth, differentiation, reproduction
