Respirtory System Flashcards
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Oxygenate, remove CO2 from the lungs
What are the alveoli?
Tiny sac like structures where gas exchange takes place
What are the main muscles of the respiratory system?
Diaphragm- sheet of muscle that deprecated the thorax from the abdomen
Intercostal- both internal and external situated between the ribs
Describe the physical process of breathing
At rest the elastic recoil of the lungs pulls the chest cavity downwards and the diaphragm is relaxed, so the pressure from the contents of the abdomen pushes the diaphragm up into the chest cavity.
During breathing in, the diaphragm contacts and pulls downs wards. At the same time the external intercostal contract and lift up the front of the chest to increase chest volume.
Expiration is passive during quiet breathing- elastic recoil
What is the tidal volume
The volume of air that is moved into and out of the lungs during quiet breathing
What is the minute volume?
The amount of air moved in and out of the lungs in 1 minute
What is vital capacity
The amount of air that can be expired following a maximum inspiratory effort
