Musculo-skeletol System Flashcards
What is the skeletal system made of?
Bones
Connective tissue
Ligaments
Cartilage and tendons
What are the functions of the skeletal system
Structure for the body
Gives the body shape and movement
Provides protection for organs
What are the types of bone tissue made?
Compact- hard outer layer strong and dense
Spongy- spongy inner layer which is less dense
How are bones classified
Shape Long Short Flat Irregular Sesamoid Sutural
How is bone developed during embryonic life?
They derive from stem cells, they secrete osteiod which forms bones. Osteoblasts have a crucial role in maintaining the balance of bone formation and resorption
Name the tissue that of which the embryonic skull is first made
Mesenchyme
What factors effect bone growth and maintenance
Calcium in the diet Physical activity Age Size Hormone levels
How many bones are there in the human body
206
What are the main bones in the body
Skull Spine Chest Arms Hands Pelvis
What are muscle cells specialised to do?
They bring parts of the body closer together
They contain protein fibres that contract when energy is available
What are tendons
Fibrous tissue which attaches muscle to bone
What are ligaments
Fibroids connective tissue that attaches bone to bone
Which ligaments may be affected during pregnancy and why
The round ligaments in the pelvis
They help support the uterus by connecting the front of the uterus to the groin, during pregnancy they become softer and May starch. Causing pain
What is muscle tone
Continuous and passive contraction of the muscle or the muscles resistance during the resting state
What is muscle sense
The ability to perceive the position and movement of our body segments without the aid of vision
