What do the NAACP and UNIA have in common?
They were the most important black political movements and those movements encouraged blacks to set up their own businesses and restaurants and boycott large stores that would not employ black staff.
What did the UNIA and the NAACP criticise about each other?
Garvey (UNIA) criticised the middle-class black of the NAACP for being ashamed of their ancestry and trying to integrate into white society.
NAACP in turn criticised UNIA for concentrating solely on race and calling for separatism, also claiming that Garvey’s steamship was cheating its customers.

1923 - arrested on fraud charges and later deported to Jamaica
Outline the Monkey-Scopes Trial
Science teacher John Scopes taught the theory of evolution to his classes - going against the anti-evolution law.
Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was banned in some states.
State of Tennessee argued that it wasn’t correct and was against the creation part of the bible.
Scopes found guilty and fined $100 - failure though to the fundamentalists for trying to censor what was taught in schools
