Summary of the experience of new immigrants of Ellis Island
Between 1900 - 1915, 5,000 immigrants arrived at Ellis Eland every day.
Many tests they’d have to take including medical ones they feared.
Non-medical tests included questions about occupations, whether they could read or write & their financial situation.
Names of immigrants were often a problem as officials could not understand them (many received new names on their registration forms.)
Young women on their own were held until relatives came from them. It was thought that they’d become destitute and turn to prostitution.
