What does Freeman mean?
A peasant who was free to move around and work for themselves.
What does Villein mean?
A peasant who worked on the Lord’s land as well as their own and had to have the Lord’s permission to move.
What does Serfdom mean?
Lords controlling villeins was a system called serfdom.
What does Epidemic mean?
A widespread outbreak of a disease.
What does Pandemic mean?
An epidemic which has spread across a large area and affected a substantial number of people.
What does Plague mean?
The infectious disease which caused the Black Death.
What was The Black Death?
The worst outbreak of the plague in history which took place in England 1348-50.
What does Yersinia Pestis mean?
The bacteria which we now know caused the plague.
What was the Four Humours Theory?
A medieval idea about the way the body could be kept healthy. Plague treatments were based on this theory.
What was the Miasma Theory?
A medieval idea that bad smalls caused disease.
What does Poll Tax mean?
A tax where everyone has to pay the same amount.
