The Biology Of Controlling Fertility Flashcards
How are males fertility described
Continuous
How are men always fertile
what does the pituitary gland do
Hormones (FSH AND ICSH) are maintained at a constant level which results in steady production of testosterone.
How are females fertility described
Cyclical
When are females most likely to conceive
In a fertile period ( lasts about 5 days)
How can a female tell when she is ovulating
Rise in body temperature slightly and cervical mucus is thinned to make it easier for sperm
Fertile period is roughly 6-10 days after period
What is the cause of failure to ovulate
Pituitary gland fails to release FSH and LH
You can get drugs to mimic these hormones though this can cause super ovulation
Describe artificial insemenation
Semen is collected and put in a syringe and inserted in a female without intercourse
Useful for men with a low sperm count or can get a sperm donor
Describe IVF
Can be caused by a blockage in oviduct, perhaps because of a PID or chlamydia. Ova are surgically removed after stimulation of hormones. Mixed with sperm outside body and put eggs back in female
Describe ICSH
One sperm per ovum needed. Head of a sperm is drawn in a needle and injected in ova
What is a PGD
Check for abnormalities
Name methods of contraception
Condom IUD vasectomy Tubal ligation Pill to stop FSH AND LH- thickens mucus Diaphragm
Risks and ethics of some treatments for infertility
- multiple births
- ovarian hyper-stimulation ( enlarges and fluid filled)
- chance of ovarian cysts
PGD
- wrong to interfere with abnormalities
