Hormonal Control Of Reproduction Flashcards
What are the 2 chemicals in men in puberty
FSH AND ICSH
What hormone is released to promote sperm production
FSH
What does ICSH stimulate in sperm production
Stimulates the release of testosterone from interstitial cells which promotes sperm production
What occurs in the brain in men for sperm production to start
Hypothalamus releases a release hormone which activates the pituitary gland which sends FSH and ICSH to the testes
What happens in men as negative feed back
When testosterone levels are too high the pituitary gland stops sending FSH and ICSH to temporarily stop the production of testosterone
What hormone in females initiates gamete release
FSH matures follicles and the releases oestrogen
What hormone triggers ovulation
LH
How long is menstrual cycle
28 days
What happens in follicular phase
FSH stimulates development and maturation of a follicle surrounding the ovum and the production of the sex hormone oestrogen by the follicle
What does oestrogen stimulate
Repair and vascularisation of the endometrium thickening kt
What happens in the luteal phase
A surge of LH triggers ovulation and stimulates the development of the corpus luteum from the follicle
What does LH secrete
Progesterone
What happens if no fertilisation takes place
Corpus luteum degenerates and the progesterone and oestrogen levels decrease. The low levels result in mensturstjon with the the loss of the inner layer of the endometrium along with blood
What’s the endocrine gland
Produces and releases hormones
