What are the techniques that Anglo-Saxon poets used in their poetry?
Alliteration, rhythms, caesuras, and kennings.
Why did Anglo-Saxon use certain techniques in their poetry?
To make their verses easier to chant.
What is alliteration?
It’s the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. (Sally sold seven sea shells…)
What is rhythm?
It’s a repeated pattern of beats.
What’s a caesura?
A caesura is a pause that divides the line, with each part having two stresses. (Grende came, hoping to kill)
What’s a kenning?
A kenning is made when you take two words and combine them as a mild translation or metaphor for something else. (a wave-floater = a ship)
Who is Grendel?
Grendel is a monstrous creature who terrorizes the kingdom of the Danes.
