Chapter 15 Chemistry Flashcards
What is the common ion effect?
When there is a shift in the equilibrium position because of the addition of an ion already invloved in the equilibrium reaction.
What are the major species in a solution that contains HF, ka =7.2x10^-4 and NaF (salt).
HF will dissociate less.
Fewer H+ ions will be present.
The solution will be less acidic as a result.
What do buffered solutions do?
Resist change in pH when H+ or OH- protons are added.
Buffers may contain:
Weak acids and its salt, or weak bases and its salt.

pH = 4.74
What is the buffers capacity determined by?
The magnitude of [HA] and [A-]
What is the pH of a buffered solution determined by?
The ratio of [A-]/[HA]
What is a titration?
It’s a method commonly used to determine the amount of acid or base in a solution.
What is the known concentration of a solution called in titration?
The titrant.
What is the unknown concentration of a solution called in titration?
What is the plotting of the pH being analyzed as a function of the amount of titrant called?
The pH curve or titration curve.
