The basics of the brain structure Flashcards
What is the definition of the mind?
System that creates representations of the world so we can act on it and achieve goals.
What is the principal of neural representation?
The idea that everything you experience is based on representations of a persons nervous system.
What are feature detectors?
Neurons that respond best to a specific stimulus.
What is sensory coding?
How neurons represent various characteristics in the environment and how they communicate it.
What is specificity coding?
Representation of a stimulus by the firing of specifically coded neurons specialised to only respond to that stimulus.
What is sparse coding?
Representation of a stimulus by pattern of firing a small group of neurons.
What is the role of the frontal lobe?
Controls the motor cortex, focus, conscious and attention.
What is in the pareital lobe?
Sensory cortex.
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Vision
What is the role of the temporal lobe?
Auditory, memory and language.
What is the function of the brain stem?
Unconscious things, breathing and heart rate.
What is perception?
Localised functions such as vision, touch.
How was the nerve net founded?
Through using a stain and microscope to uncover the smaller units of the brain.
When was it found that not all nerves were connected?
1800’s
What was the nerve net theory upgraded to?
The neuron doctrine theory that suggested that the cells were not continuous but single neurons connected.
