The Basic Unit of Life Flashcards
Centrosome
organizes microtubules and the cell division process; provide structure for the cell
Cytoskeleton
gives cell its shape
Golgi apparatus
helps process and package proteins and lipid molecules
Lysosomes
break down excess or worn out cell parts; destroy invading viruses and bacteria
Mitochondria
makes energy in the form of ATP;generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions
Nuclear membrane
acts as a barrier to cells that separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm
Nucleolus
builds, processes, and assembles cell ribosomes
Nucleus
handles complex and important info; reads and executes written directions
Peroxisome
helps break down very long chain fatty acids;carrying out oxidative reactions using molecular oxygen
Plasma membrane
provides protection for a cell;regulates the transport of materials entering and exiting the cell
Ribosome
synthesizes proteins by translating the genetic code in mRNA into an amino acid sequence
Secretory vesicle
breaks down food in the stomach; keeps organ and tissue functions healthy
Smooth ER
involved in the synthesis and storage of lipids, phospholipids as in plasma membranes, and steroids
Storage granule
stores products and nutrients for later export of the cell and organelles;store the cell’s energy reserves as well as other important metabolites
Central vacuole
surrounded by a membrane to hold materials and wastes;stores water and regulates turgor pressure
Chloroplasts
help with photosynthesis; synthesize food from CO2 and H20
Rough ER
production’ folding, quality control and dispatch of some proteins
Cell wall
provides protection against pathogens; regulates flow of info between cells;separates the interior contents of the cell from the exterior environment.
Cytoplasm
responsible for holding the components of the cell and protects them from damage
Food vacuole
store and digest food particles within the cells
Secretory vesicle
moves molecules outside the cell
